What to expect

For 6 weeks from 26th July to 30th August we are exploring 'Flaming Hot Fibres', you can enjoy using fabrics, papers, paint, print, stitch, beads and more to make your own creative art. Experiment with a multitude of ways to use heat, flame and stitch to produce exciting colours, textures and patterns on various materials. Then explore ways to manipulate these to create richly coloured, textured and embellished surfaces and forms that can be used to create 2D journal covers, wall-hangings, or 3D forms, such as vessels, jewellery or sculpture. You will examine and explore the distinctive properties the properties of heat-reactive, non-woven spun bond materials such as Lutradur and Tyvek and other heat reactive materials. Learn how to colour them and to apply heat to manipulate and layer, weave, wrap, fold and distress them to create rich textural surfaces suitable for stitch and further embellishment. Begin by creating a folio of experimental samples, exploring the many colours, patterns, surfaces and structural elements that can be created with heat and flames, then combine your new skills with other materials and techniques such as stitching by hand and by machine to create a unique mixed media and textile artwork. The classes are led by Alysn Midgelow-Marsden, an internationally experienced artist and teacher. Anyone with an enthusiasm for textile and mixed media arts, from beginners, improvers and experienced alike are invited to book and join in with what Alysn warns ‘may become the start of an obsession’! You will learn to view almost anything as a creative tool, including a sewing machine and candles. You will learn using experimental, inclusive approaches, be guided in techniques and design skills and begin to develop your own personal style. Details of what you need to bring will be sent to you after you book, you will only need a few basics. Most materials and equipment are provided. Sessions will be held at the Rothesay Rooms in the East Coast Bays Community Rooms, Glen Road. Browns Bay. This a very spacious room giving plenty of space for us all to be creative. Once you have paid the fees are non-refundable and non-exchangeable. If there are less than 5 participants booked on the course 7 days before the start date Alysn reserves the right to cancel the sessions in which case you will be refunded.
