What to expect
Taking Textiles Further Classes in the UK are organised and delivered by Alysn Midgelow-Marsden. In 2022 there are 2 x 2 day workshops. The first on 25th and 26th October (Slash and Burn), the second (Mind the Gap) on 1st and 2nd November. Held at Risley Village Hall, Derbyshire ( easy to find just off the M1 at Junction 25), the workshops can be taken separately or combine your achievements to create a final piece. Both workshops concentrate on various techniques for manipulating and stitching with metal, wires and adding other media details. 25th and 26th October 2022 Title: Slash and Burn Create a panel or small three dimensional sculpture, vessel, lamp cover, bag or wearable accessory using a combination of woven metals, sheer fabrics, burning techniques, machine appliqué and lots of beads and hand embellishments. You will first develop a ‘design’ using a straightforward technique based around simple observations and drawn marks, developed and refined using masking, tracing and changing scale. Then you will plan your project and transform metal fabric by clothing it in chiffons and organzas which we will then burn away with soldering irons or cut away with scissors. The chiffons can be applied by hand or machine stitch, or by gel medium after which you will add interest and complexity to the surface with more stitch, beads and wires if you want to add another dimension This workshop achieves results more quickly if using a sewing machine for some of the time, however hand stitchers will also have no difficulty in creating a lovely, textured artwork.
