Coaching and Mentoring

  • As a practicing or an aspiring artist, there are inevitably areas of your practice you feel you could be better at (this is normal - we are all somewhere on that spectrum), or which were missing in your education, or perhaps there are new directions you want to explore.

  • I have over 30 years (and still going!) experience as an artist and as a gallery/art centre owner. I feel that this has endowed me with a wide ranging knowledge of practical skills for making the 'business' of art easier and clearer in addition to the techniques available for art practice.

  • Art mentorship can be a transformative experience during this process. Having a mentor provides invaluable guidance, support, and insight that can help you navigate the complexities of the art world and achieve your goals. Through guidance, support, and knowledge sharing, a good mentoring relationship empowers you to unlock your full potential and navigate challenges with confidence.

  • The most important thing an artist mentor can do for you is to help you to stay on track with your goals, cut down the time it takes to reach competence and mastery. Never be afraid to ask for help - there is plenty of it available.

  • Sometimes the most appropriate option is to work one to one with a coach or mentor, at other times joining a supportive group and connecting with people who are as interested in their career path as you are. Working in close collaboration can provide social support and comfort for you.

  • Whether through a group or individual mentoring situations, a further advantage is empathy and understanding of similarly challenging and successful art career experiences.

  • Consider what you are most wanting - is it practical art skills, or practical professional skills development such as pricing, exhibition publicity planning, project development, funding applications, writing about your work etc., or broader guidance and support for instance where do you want to go with your work?

  • Depending on your goals we can choose a long term (meeting at regular intervals for as long as you need or want), a flash speed date style (a single or short series of focussed goal based session/s), or group mentoring.
