What to expect

Reveal and transform through heat with contemporary textile and stitch techniques. Taking visual inspiration from rusty, encrusted and peeling surfaces or natural forms such as geology and seed pods. Starting from our inspiration photos or objects, we will play with a simple and free flowing (if a bit wacky) drawing technique guaranteed to make you smile and develop your ideas. Then things heat up! Create a richly textured background using fabrics, papers, metals or metal cloths, layer with manmade sheers or other heat reactive textile/materials, stitch, and selectively melt the top layers to reveal what’s underneath. Over the 2 days you will develop your own unique piece which could be for a hanging or a three-dimensional form, filled with layered colour, stitches and embellishments. General information: The workshop is primarily sewing machine-based, but is adaptable for hand stitchers too, I’ll work with your skills and help you to develop new ones as needed. I have a few sewing machines for you to borrow if needed though I recommend bringing your own if you have one. Included in your workshop fee is a materials charge to cover the materials for you to create a piece during the course. There are supplies to buy if you wish to add to these as you go. Refreshments are included, bring your own lunch. If you would like accommodation in our Lodges please get in touch to check availability and special retreat prices. A materials list will be sent after your booking is made. Dates/Times: 20 and 21 September 2025. 10am - 4pm Venue: Kotare Studio, 865 Takatu Road, Tawharanui Peninsula. Near Matakana. Cost: $250.00
